What do goats, Ethiopia and coffee have in common? Let’s explore together in this B1/B2 ESL Lesson!
The lesson uses a TED-Ed video about the history of coffee as its main listening resource. Students follow coffee’s journey from Ethiopia to Yemen, the Ottoman Empire and Europe, while developing their listening and speaking skills.
The lesson also goes beyond the fun story of coffee’s origins. Students discuss how coffee spread around the world and explore some of the darker sides of the coffee industry, including exploitation, slavery, deforestation, fair trade and climate change.
Students also get the chance to predict, take notes, reconstruct a historical story and discuss ethical questions about something many of us enjoy every day — coffee!
A great lesson for students who enjoy history, culture, surprising stories and TED-Ed videos — with plenty of opportunities to get them talking.
