Looking for a fun way to practise autumn vocabulary? This Autumn Code Breaker combines vocabulary practice with a little puzzle-solving!

Students have to decode the hidden autumn words and discover a collection of things we often associate with the season. The activity includes 12 autumn-themed words, including acorn, chestnut, squirrel, pumpkin, corn, turkey, apples, hedgehog and rain.

It’s a simple activity, but it gives students a chance to practise vocabulary while keeping them engaged and curious. It can be used as a short warm-up, a lesson filler, an early-finisher activity or part of a larger autumn-themed lesson.

The vocabulary is suitable for learners who are building their basic English vocabulary and can easily be followed up with speaking activities.

More ways to use it

Once students have decoded all the words, ask them to choose a few and make sentences with them. You could also ask questions such as:

• Which of these things can you find outside?
• Which ones can you eat?
• Which animals are connected with autumn?
• Which word do you most strongly associate with autumn? Why?

For stronger learners, challenge them to write a short autumn story using as many of the decoded words as possible.
