Looking for a fun way to practice English writing in your class?
This challenge is perfect for teenagers who love creativity and social media. They’re going to create an Instagram post and practice past tenses at the same time.
💡IMPORTANT1 – you can adjust the task to your needs – it can be used to practise present/future tenses or modals… or many more!
💡IMPORTANT2 – below you can download the templates and instructions in PDF format (two files).
The task
Write an Instagram-style post that tells a story or shares a personal moment. You can choose from four fun styles (below). Don’t forget: your caption must include past tenses and follow the language rules. Let’s get writing!
Choose Your Style
Pick one of the following post types and write your caption:
- A photo from a special moment
→ Describe what happened and how you felt. - A recommendation post
→ Recommend a book, movie, song, or place you experienced in the past. Tell us why it was great. - A “life update” or story post
→ Share something interesting, funny, or surprising that happened to you. - A motivational quote + your past experience
→ Choose a quote you love. Tell a real or fictional story from your past that connects with it.
Language Focus – You Must Include:
✅ Past tenses
- 1+ sentence in past simple (e.g. I went, I saw)
- 1+ sentence in past continuous (e.g. I was walking when…)
- 1+ sentence in past perfect (e.g. I had never tried…)
✅ 2+ Time expressions
Examples: last week, yesterday, when I was younger, two years ago, earlier this year
✅ 2+ Adjectives
Examples: amazing, scary, relaxing, exciting, awful, unforgettable
✅ 2+ Sentence connectors
Examples: because, so, although, while, when, after that, suddenly
✅ At least 1 emoji and 1 hashtag
Keep it fun, like a real IG post! 📱✨
Example
🥾 Last weekend, I went hiking for the first time. It was freezing, but the view was absolutely stunning!
While we were climbing, it started to snow 🌨️ I had never seen the mountains like that before, so I took about a million photos 😅 Definitely one of the best moments of this year.
