Starting a lesson with a fun and engaging activity is a great way to get students talking and thinking in English from the very beginning. If you’re teaching a class with an art theme, this Spot the Difference – ART Edition is a perfect choice!
This visual speaking warm-up is designed to encourage students to describe what they see, practise useful art-related vocabulary, and collaborate with their classmates to find all the hidden differences. It’s ideal for both small groups and larger classes, and works well with A2-B1 level students or even as a light, no-pressure activity for higher levels.
There are 9 subtle differences between two images, and students will need to look closely to spot them all. This naturally leads to using vocabulary connected to shapes, colours, objects in a gallery or museum, and position words like “next to,” “on the left,” “in the background,” etc.
How to use it?
- With lower-level groups, show them both pictures at the same time and ask them to compare them. Help whenever necessary. It’s best to encourage full sentences.
- With more advanced students, divide them into pairs. Each person can only see one version of the picture. They have to describe the picture in detail and discuss the differences.
Happy teaching & learning!
