Cold War Mystery: Sweden, Strange Sea Sounds, and the Power of Fear

What happens when fear meets uncertainty?

This lesson explores a real and surprising Cold War story from Sweden, where mysterious underwater sounds were believed to be enemy submarines. Through engaging storytelling and listening tasks, students follow the investigation from suspicion to a surprising scientific explanation.

The lesson is available in two levels (A2+/B1 and B1/B2) and includes three-part listening texts that gradually reveal the truth. Students practise key vocabulary related to the sea, the military, and emotions such as fear and tension, before moving on to speaking and writing tasks that encourage reflection and critical thinking.

The lesson ends with a creative journalist task, discussion questions about fear and decision-making, and a Taboo game to recycle vocabulary in a fun, communicative way.
Perfect for lessons on history, misinformation, and how emotions influence our understanding of events.

Happy teaching and learning!
