Venice is unlike any other city in the world. Built on more than 100 small islands connected by canals and bridges, it has fascinated travellers for centuries. But why was Venice built in the middle of a lagoon? How did it become one of Europe’s richest trading cities? And what challenges does it face today?
This printable A2+/B1 ESL lesson takes students on a journey through the fascinating history of Venice while developing their speaking, listening, grammar, and vocabulary skills.
Students begin with a discussion about travelling, tourism, and their favourite cities before reviewing the Second Conditional through engaging historical scenarios. They imagine what they would do if they had to escape from invaders, live on small islands, or survive without being able to grow their own food—just like the first settlers of Venice.
The lesson also includes a listening activity based on a 180-word text.
To reinforce understanding, students complete vocabulary matching activities, contextual speaking practice, reading comprehension exercises, word formation tasks, and additional Second Conditional practice inspired by Venice’s history.
The lesson finishes with thought-provoking discussion questions about protecting historical cities, responsible tourism, climate change, and famous architectural landmarks around the world.
