Ready to explore the world’s creepiest corners?
This Halloween-inspired B2 ESL lesson takes your students on a journey through some of the planet’s most haunted and abandoned places — from Italy’s cursed island of Poveglia to Japan’s mysterious Aokigahara Forest.
The class begins with eerie photo prompts, where learners guess what might have happened in each place and discuss their first impressions. A warm-up discussion follows, encouraging students to reflect on fear, fascination, and why people love ghost stories.
Next, students work with spooky vocabulary through a matching activity, then read five short texts about famous haunted locations:
- The Amityville House,
- Eastern State Penitentiary,
- Poveglia Island,
- Aokigahara Forest,
- Bhangarh Fort.
Each text includes a True/False comprehension task and follow-up discussion.
To finish, students take part in a creative writing activity, using prompts and photos to invent their own ghost or haunted house story — followed by a final discussion on mystery, memory, and imagination.
Perfect for October lessons or any time you want to bring a bit of eerie excitement into your classroom!
